A E Q U O R E A

Aequorea was produced in collaboration with synthetic biologists at Puraffinity (Imperial College) and fashion design researcher Dr Phoebe Wang, working with Puraffinity’s functionalised laboratory-grown bacterial cellulose material. We explored the properties of differing grades of bacterial cellulose, including shape retention, dye absorption and strength. There is future potential scope for the application of natural waxes and oils, as used for leather, as well as using synthetic biology to adapt bacterial cellulose at a genetic level and build-in innovative material properties.
